Following the British-mediated peace in the War Between States and the shelved Emancipation Proclamation after McClellan's failure at Antietam, Lincoln's base with the Radical Republicans was demolished, and with his popularity declining in the wake of the Confederacy's creation, it was clear the Radicals needed a new voice within government. This voice was found in John C. Fremont. Not only a noted abolitionist, but one who had issued his own Emancipation Edict as Department of the West and had been promptly sacked. This, naturally became the cornerstone of his campaign. In the wake of Lincoln's apparent failure, Fremont was able to present himself as a noble man who had been restrained by the administration.

In spite of competition, the National Union Party persisted enough to nominate Lincoln again to serve a second term. The Democratic Party also found it's footing in General McClellan, although Democratic Party's position of reconciliation with the Confederate States was at the wrong place and wrong time.

While Fremont was able to be Elected, the Radical Democracy Party was short-lived as it soon found itself absorbed back into the Republican Party as the National Union Party finally collapsed. The Republican Party would launch a united Ticket next election under Ulysses S. Grant, however the division between the Radicals and the more Moderate wings (and later, the Stalwarts and Half-Breeds) would still cause one or the other to attempt to gain the presidency alone occasionally.

Lincoln and Johnson's names are still bolded indicating that they were the victors of the election.

The War Of The World's (Redux)
Part One

The Coming of the Martians
No one would have believed
In the last years of the nineteenth century
That human affairs were being watched from the timeless worlds of space
No one could have dreamed that we were being scrutinized
As someone with a microscope studies creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water
Few men even considered the possibility of life on other planets
And yet, across the gulf of space
Minds immeasurably superior to ours

Regarded this Earth with envious eyes
And slowly and surely, they drew their plans against US

6-The Battle of Washington DC.jpg

The steamer began to move slowly away but on the landward horizon appeared the silhouette of a fighting machine.
Another came, and another, striding over hills and trees, plunging far out to sea and blocking the exit of the steamer.
Between them lay the silent, grey Ironclad "Thunder Child".
Slowly it moved towards shore; then, with a deafening roar and whoosh of spray,
it swung about and drove at full speed towards the waiting Martians
7-The Battle of River Thames.jpg

When the smoke cleared, the steamers had reached the misty horizon
But the Thunder Child had vanished forever, taking with her man's last hope of victory.
The leaden sky was lit by green flashes, cylinder following cylinder, and no one and nothing was left now to fight them.
The Earth belonged to the Martians…

Props to whoever managed to survive the Martian invasion and occupation to invent the internet, wikipedia, and this infobox!

This looks awesome! Haven't talked in a while; hope you're well. Is this a TL with a full Martian victory and occupation of Earth? Do they eventually get defeated

Maybe a Martian did it!
They all died of germs so the whole war didn't last that long. Also (at least in the original version) the Death Ride of the Thunderchild is actually a pyric human victory in that the refugee transports escaped and while humanity lost a bunch of ships they were obsolete torpedo rams we could afford to lose. Meanwhile the Martian's lost three tripods they may have a hard time replacing and withdrew from battle when the Battleships arrived...

if there's one consistent thing across all the adaptations, it does seem to be the ending.
You could argue the Martians had no idea what Thunderchild was or what it could do, giving it that very brief chance to fight back.
The Martians in the book do seem to adapt to our strategies quite quickly, when a tripod gets disabled earlier they retreat and return with the black smoke which never seems to turn up much in any adaptation.
For a book from the 1890s, it still reads quite well. Finished re-reading it the other day hence the inspiration.
I ponder how safe the refugees are, given the war is extended here ever so slightly there's a high chance the Martian forces could reach France in some form of twisted D-day. Very likely using the flying machine to do so.

The War Of The World's (Redux)
The Final
Earth Under The Martians
8-The Raid on Chicago.jpg

Scattered about their encampment, in their overturned machines, were the Martians dead..slain,
After all, man's devices had failed, by the humblest things upon the Earth:
Bacteria.
Minute, invisible bacteria
9-The Death Of The Martian's.jpg

Directly the invaders arrived and drank and fed, our microscopic allies attacked them.
From that moment
They were doomed!
The torment was ended.
The people scattered over the country, desperate, leaderless, starved
The thousands who had fled by sea all would return.
The pulse of life, growing stronger and stronger, would beat again
10-Victory Over The Martians Day.jpg

As life returns to normal, the question of another attack from Mars causes universal concern.
Is our planet safe, or is this time of peace merely a reprieve?
It may be that, across the immensity of space, they have learned their lessons and even now await the opportunity.
Perhaps the future belongs not to us
but to the Martians

An alternate Remembrance Day in 1899, very interesting! So is TTL in the same universe as the one with Tesla being correct in observing "canals on Mars"? And does humanity ever meet the Martians again during a future manned mission to Mars?

Well, the book (which this is kinda based on) never gives you an answer on what's next.
There are two sequels I know of (there will be more) which see round 2 happen but this time humanity has reversed-engineered Martian weapons.
And depending on which sequel you follow it has different effects on the world.
Tesla is 100% proven right in a war of the world's type of invasion.
And if man did ever end up going to mars, war would surely follow though the Martians would likely either be on another planet or dead by that point.

My list of Brazilian Prime Ministers in a TL where the 1993 referendum opted for a parliamentary republic. I decided for a ceremonial president being chosen by Congress and laws would be passed to decrease the number of parties, resulting in more ideological parties.

Not really plausible, but here it is!

This is amazing, sometimes implausabilty is the best! Also Michael Tener's faceclaim looks similar, to me at least, to Chuck McGill
