LADYHAWKE
Year of Production: 2000
Running Time: 142 min.
FCC Rating: 3 (for strong language, violence, and thematic elements)

An outstanding adaptation of Walter Mondale's 'The Wings of Victory', the biography of Rosemary Kennedy, America's first female President (1985-92). Kennedy came to prominence during the Gulf War of 1975-77, when she served as a colonel in the Air Force and was instrumental in developing the strategy which ultimately defeated the Mexican Communist Coalition. After the war, she fulfilled the dreams of her late father Joseph Kennedy by winning a Senate seat in Massachusetts, living the legacy meant for her brothers, who died in World War II and the Indonesian Conflict. Rosemary, a staunch Republican, was often at odds with her strongly Democratic family, and no one was more surprised than she when she became President in 1984, defeating Jimmy Carter's bid for a third term.
Ladyhawke is a quality film. Michelle Pfieffer is excellent as Rosemary Kennedy, Rutger Hauer is solid as Senator and Vice President Richard Nixon, and Matthew Broderick is surprisingly sinister as Vasily Irenko, the Soviet advisor to Mexico's Premier Gomez.

Our Rating: 8 out of 10
Also recommended: '1200 Days: The Reign of Alberto Gomez'; 'The Warriors'; 'Marching South'.

Here you go :)

1880’s – Labor unrest in the US is co-opted by the suffrage movement led by Susan B. Anthony. By 1890, along with 8 hour work day’s, women get the right to vote.

1930’s – Eleanor Roosevelt pioneers the movement of 1st ladies campaigning for their husbands. She goes on diplomatic missions and turns the position of the 1st lady into the face of the White House.

WWII – women are allowed to serve in the military as guards, support personal, and curriers. Several well documented instances of bravery lead to this becoming official policy after the war. Along with desegregation, women are also allowed to become part of the command structure.

After the war, several thousand Japanese soldiers in Indonesia turned guerrilla and refused to surrender. The last were finally killed by 1949 but several hundred allied troops were killed in the process.

Korea – several women serve as fighter pilots. During the fallback to the current DMZ, women serving in the rear suddenly became front line troops and preformed admirably. President McCarthy continues the buildup and conquers all of Korea with the use of several tactical nukes.

(The American military is almost a third larger then OTL due to the almost constant small conflicts. Communist pressure is much stronger and America responds to it more aggressively).

1965-68 – American troops liberate all of Vietnam with a single massive invasion. Hanoi is razed by constant B-52 bombing and Jane Fonda is tried and convicted for treason (she remains in prison to this day). Women are fully integrated into the military with the exception of frontline, high causality operations.

1970 – Mexico, Cuba, and several other central America countries go communist. Mexico dominates them all and declares an alliance independent of the Soviet Union although they are still friendly. The US constructs a massive border wall.

1973 – The Mexican alliance has assembled a massive, although poorly equipped military. They announce their intention to “reclaim” the American Southwest and demands negotiations (the US ignores them. By this time, women officers who have been in the military since WWII and Korea have attained high ranks.

1975-77 - Ayatollah Khomeini takes power in Iran and almost immediately attacks US interest (no hostage crises, we seen this coming). After a few weeks of wrangling, war is declared. With some help from Iraq and Pakistan (and a large amount from loyal Iranians), the Iranian military is taken down relatively quickly. The US supplied air force was a problem but Colonel Rosemary Kennedy managed to destroy most of it with superior tactics.

1979– after a build up of several months, the Mexican alliance “invades” the US. A few troops cross the American border and a few shells land on San Diego but essentially it’s a replay of the 1st war, although acted out in a few months. Colonel Kennedy commanded the Air Force in Florida and completely destroyed the Cuban, Soviet purchased, air force. By July of 1974 all of Latin America was permanently occupied and would stay so until the end of the Cold War.

Late 1979 – Rosemary Kennedy retires from the military and runs for the US House, winning hands down.

@Raymann: A good start, though I probably would have left out some of the more fantastic elements, like total US victory in Korea and Vietnam...

I did like your early suffrage and more prominent First Ladies. Good ideas.

Also, the movie excerpt clearly states that there was a Gulf War (the Gulf being the Gulf of Mexico) from '75-'77, so your Mexican invasion timetable doesn't exactly work.
