The Pacific Defense League and the American-Japanese Wars
(part of
A Fictional History of the United States)
The period between World War II and the coronation of the Anti-Christ saw a record number of alien and monster attacks upon humanity. The vast majority of these invasions were not a global threat- most of them were localized to a specific country or region. Certain cities were known to be especially dangerous- New York City, Gotham, Metropolis, and London were notorious for coming under frequent attack by aliens, metahumans, and monsters. The nation with the highest per capita rate of invasions from non-human sources, however, was Japan. Japan was partially the victim of geography- the seas surrounding Japan were known to be a particularly fertile breeding ground for Kaiju, who were attracted to Japan’s largest cities. However, the presence of Kaiju alone cannot explain the ill fortune of the Japanese. Japan also suffered from a record number of alien invasions and terrorist attacks from the 1950s onward. The terrorist organization Shocker, a splinter group of Hydra, waged a decades long insurgency against the Japanese government. Additionally, the Mutant Supremacist organization the Neo-Human Empire launched numerous terrorist attacks throughout the 1970s and 1980s, mirroring the insurgency carried out by the Brotherhood of Mutants in North America. The constitution imposed by the Americans after World War II forbade the existence of a standing Japanese military. In the seventy years following the ratification of the post-World War II Constitution, Japan suffered from thousands of alien, monster, mutant and human attacks. This constitutional prohibition on military force was partially suspended as Japan developed a variety of special forces and paramilitary groups to contain the constant wave of attacks. While Japan developed advanced military technology, it attempted to uphold the spirit of Article 9 by applying this technology only for defensive purposes.
For the most part, Japan’s Defense Forces had subsets that were specialized to counter a very specific kind of threat. The Kamen Riders were specifically focused on the threat posed by Shocker. The different incarnations of Ultraman largely focused on fighting alien attacks. The Mazinger Z robots focused on fighting the Underground Empire. A government special division was created to contain Japan’s Kaiju population, corralling them into Monster Island, an isolation zone. The Super Sentai were focused on combatting alien Kaiju, who were considered less respectable than domestic Kaiju protected by treaties regarding wildlife and endangered species. While the combination of these advanced technologies could have made for a potent military force, in keeping with Japan’s constitution, the Japanese used these technologies purely for defense, and even then in a limited manner. However, Japan did allow some military technologies to be adapted for civilian purposes, allowing Japan to develop advanced robotics and to become the world’s most technologically advanced nation.
Prior to the 2020s, there were two significant breaches of Article 9 of the Japanese constitution. In 1991, Japan suffered from an asset market collapse, an economic crisis engineered by the secret society known as the Hand. The asset market collapse coincided with the United States imposing protectionist restrictions on the Japanese goods, severely damaging the Japanese economy. The Liberal Democratic Party lost power for the first time in decades, and replaced by a weak coalition government. The coalition government fell under the influence of a joint conspiracy between The Hand and Shocker. The Hand and Shocker, united in a common cause by businessman and Hand member Raizo Yamata sought to convert Japan into a fascist state and restore the Japanese Empire. Prime Minister Mogatura Koga was replaced by Hiroshi Goto, a puppet of Yamata. The Goto government invaded the Marianas Islands as part of the first stage of a war against the United States. Goto unilaterally revoked Article 9, and declared the Super Sentai, Kamen Rider, Ultraman, and Mazinger programs were part of the restored Japanese Imperial Army. Nationalizing numerous factories, Goto clearly intended to build an army of Mechas and high-tech soldiers to deploy against the American government.
The original Kamen Rider, Takeshi Hongo, immediately became suspicious of the Japan New Party government. Goto suspected that Shocker had a role in the new administration. Takeshi vocally denounced the new regime, prompting The Hand to send ninjas to assassinate him. Fortunately for Takeshi, a mole within the Hand learned of the assassination plot and warned The Chaste, the ancient enemies of the Hand. Recognizing that Takeshi would be a useful ally against the Hand-controlled government, Stick, the leader of the Chaste, personally intervened to save Takeshi’s life. Stick and two members of the Chaste intervened to kill the ninjas sent to kill Takeshi in the dead of the night. Awakened by the attack on his home, Takeshi was removed to a secure location by Stick. Stick informed Takeshi that his suspicions regarding the Hand’s involvement in the Goto government were correct. Shocked by the fall of his nation to extremism, Takeshi agreed to assemble Japan’s greatest heroes to resist Raizo Yamata’s efforts to militarize Japan.
Takeshi first agreed to assemble seven of the Kamen Riders who had succeeded him. Stick approached Jotaro Kujo, a powerful stand (magical spirit) user while Kujo was under attack from agents of the Hand. As an associate of the American philanthropic group the Speedwagon Foundation, Kujo was identified as a potential threat to the war effort against the United States. A member of the Hand produced a powerful stand, Green Man, which produced poisonous weeds against Kujo. The weeds nearly suffocated Kujo, but his Star Platinum stand dealt several rapid punches to the Green Man, permanently crippling the Stand’s user. The other agents of the Hand fled Star Platinum after he killed three of them. Stick, observed the fight from a distance, impressed that Kujo could defeat his opponents without his intervention. Stick then moved towards Kujo, who mistook him for an agent of the Hand. Stick was barely able to avoid the blows of Star Platinum, then pleaded for a moment to explain himself. Stick informed Kujo he sought his aid in building an army to overthrow the government. Despite being initially suspicious, Kujo agreed to join Stick’s army.
Stick assigned Kujo his first mission- the liberation of the Turbo Rangers from a government detainment facility in Tokyo. The Turbo Rangers were a team of recent high school graduates who had achieved celebrity defending Japan from the Bouma, a tribe of ancient demons. The Turbo Rangers had been summoned by the government on the grounds that they were needed to combat a new threat, the Snarks. The Snarks were entirely fictional, and the government in fact intended to deploy the Turbo Rangers against the American Navy. When the Turbo Rangers refused to cooperate with Raizo Yamata, stating that their powers were intended to defend mankind and not to wage war, Raizo Yamata ordered their imprisonment. Raizo Yamata plotted to either torture or brainwash the Turbo Rangers into surrendering their technology to Hand agents. Kujo broke into the prison in which the Turbo Rangers were imprisoned, and used Star Platinum to single-handedly eliminate their guards. The Turbo Rangers then escaped in a get-away helicopter with Kujo to the Chaste base in Gunma Prefecture. Kujo additionally liberated other prisoners kept in the same prison as the Turbo Rangers- Inuzaman and the mutant members of the Youth League. The Hand was apparently intent on conscripting and brainwashing Japan’s mutant population into an army used for conquest. The Youth League accompanied the Turbo Rangers to Gunma and agreed to aid the Chaste.
While Kujo rescued the Turbo Rangers, Takeshi Hongo approached Koji Kabuto, who was known to have operated multiple large Mechas. Koji informed Takeshi that he had already turned down a request by the Goto government to turn his Mechas over to the Japanese Defense Forces. Takeshi stated that the Japanese Defense Forces had fallen under the control of a fascist death cult, and that the government was likely to seize his Mechas by force. Takeshi offered to deploy the army of the Chaste near Mount Fuji, where Koji stored his Mechas. Rather than risk civilian casualties in a densely populated city, Takeshi sought to draw the forces of the Hand and Shocker into a rural area. Koji Kabuto agreed that the countryside surrounding Mount Fuji would be an ideal place to make a stand against the government. The Army of the Chaste quickly deployed to Mount Fuji to defend Koji Kabuto.
Expecting resistance from Koji, Raiza Yamato deployed elite units from Shocker to Mount Fuji, sending the elite Shocker Riders to battle the Chaste. Units from the Badaan Empire were also present, as were Mechanical Beasts from the Underground Empire, which was part of the fascist conspiracy which had seized control of Japan. The Japanese government had also somehow summoned the Kaiju Red King to fight on their behalf. As the armies of darkness converged on Mount Fuji, Haruna Morikawa, the Pink Turbo Ranger, made an emergency trip to Monster Island to negotiate with the Shobijin fairies, who belonged to the same tribe of fairies which had empowered the Turbo Rangers. She asked the Shobijin to deploy the Kaiju Mothra against the forces of the government. Mothra arrived just in time before the Chaste was surrounded by the numerically superior Shocker Army. Faced against the concentrated firepower of multiple Mechas, Kamen Riders, Mutants, Chaste Ninjas, Stand users, and Mothra, the overconfident Shocker forces were rather quickly routed. Mothra defeated Red King and then pursued the fleeing Shocker agents.
The Goto cabinet’s defeat at Mount Fuji meant that Japan was unable to use advanced weaponry in the war against the United States. Subsequent minor skirmishes between the Chaste and the Hand were an embarrassment for Hiroshi Goto, who suffered a drastic drop in popular support due to the Chaste Insurrection. The failure of Goto to supplement Japan’s war in the Pacific left the Japanese Defense Forces vulnerable to the United States. Japan was forced from the Marianas Islands. As American forces invaded Japan, Takeshi Hongo and the Kamen Riders arrested Yamata, defeating his Shocker bodyguards. Mogatura Koga subsequently returned to the premiership. The Army of the Chaste, on the request of the restored LDP government, agreed to form the Pacific Defense League in case of further attacks on Japan. The next incarnation of Ultraman was recruited in the PDL, and Ultraman formed a key component of the Pacific Defense League Task Force.
The PDL briefly engaged in the Eugenics Wars to defend Monster Island against encroaching Augment forces. The PDL also repelled an alien fleet’s attack on Tokyo during the Harvester Invasion of 1996. Godzilla and the Kaiju of Monster Island were summoned to prevent the Harvesters from inflicting significant damage on Tokyo. In this instance, the Sailor Soldiers joined with the League to defeat the Harvesters. The Sailor Soldiers were a group of young women endowed with magical powers who spent much of the 1990s defending Japan from alien invasion. The presence of the PDL prevented the Harvesters from inflicting significant damage on Japan- out of all the major countries of the world, Japan suffered from the fewest number of casualties before the Harvesters withdrew after a few days. The success of the Sailor Soldiers in stopping the Harvester invasion lead to their permanent recruitment into the PDL. The ease of the Americans in destroying the Harvester mothership was credited to the efforts of the PDL in destroying large numbers of Harvester jets which would have otherwise protected the mothership from destruction.
In 1999, Myotismon, a vampire dictator from the DigiWorld, invaded Tokyo in an effort to eliminate his rivals the DigiDestined. The PDL was deployed to fight against an army of Bakemon while the DigiDestined battled VenomMyotismon. The DigiDestined returned to the DigiWorld before they could be interviewed by the government. Upon the return of the DigiDestined to Japan, the government ordered research into Digimon in the case of future attack from the Digiworld. In 2000, the Digimon Diaboromon hacked into the Pentagon and seized control of America’s intercontinental ballistic missile system, prompting Japan to share intelligence on the Digimon with the American government. While the PDL sought to recruit Digimon to their ranks, Digimon seemed to bound only with children. Recruiting children into their ranks violated the Geneva Conventions, and entrance to the DigiWorld was restricted to those who possessed a bound with Digimon. It would be years before the Pacific Defense League were able to recruit Digimon into their ranks. Following the second defeat of Myotismon in 2003, relations between Digimon and humans increased in frequency. Tai Ishida and Matt Kamiya, upon adulthood were recruited by the PDL to train their Digimon corps.
In 2001, Japan suffered from a rather peculiar zombie apocalypse. A plague was spread by fish carried by mechanical walking machines. The fish infected humans by a poisonous gas, who were then carried by the walking machines. The plague was the result of biological experimentation carried out by Unit 731 during World War II. While scientists rushed to synthesize a cure from the genes of the immune, the PDL was deployed to contain the zombie hordes that were overrunning Japan. Super Sentai and Mazinger forces were deployed to contain the zombies. The Zombie Plague also saw the introduction of Astro Boy to the PDL. Astro Boy, an unusually intelligent android which had only recently been built, was immune to the zombie virus due to being entirely mechanical. Astro Boy lured the zombies into concentrated mobs which were then destroyed by PDL missiles.
A time paradox in 2008 incidentally restored the Japanese Empire under the control of the Hand. Mecha technology borrowed from the PDL provided for much of the restored Japanese Empire’s military technology. Recognizing that the PDL was so powerful it could potentially conquer the Earth, a Time Lord agent of the Celestial Intervention Agency intervened to hide members of the PDL from the new Emperor. The witch Kiki was persuaded to hide members of the PDL in the spirit world until the Celestial Intervention Agency restored the normal timeline. The Kamen Riders, Ultraman, Digimon, Super Sentai, and Kaiju were thus prevented from being used as an army of aggression. The restored Japanese Empire fought World War III against the United States and the restored Soviet Union, even installing a Japanese-controlled cyborg as President of the United States. The Celestial Intervention Agency moved to restore the timeline in 2010, restoring Japan’s democratic government. The time paradox is believed to have been induced by Faction Paradox.
In the late 2000s, the serial killer Kira terrorized the world with his mysterious mass killings of criminals. The detective L eventually determined that Kira was based out of Japan. The Pacific Defense League argued how to possibly intervene against Kira. Given that Kira’s identity was unknown, it was unclear how military force could be used to defeat him. It was strongly suspected that Kira was of supernatural origin, but the Shinigami had cast spells which prevented the user of Kira’s notebook from being identified by human magic users. The witch Kiki contacted numerous powerful wizards and mages, but they were unable to provide aid to L. L was killed by Kira, but L’s successor Near eventually determined Kira’s identity, liberating Japan. Kira’s followers had gained political influence, holding the Japanese government hostage to the demands of draconian far-right nationalists. Following the death of Kira, the political influence of his cult collapsed. The detective Near was then recruited into the PDL.
The Mechas utilized by Koji Kabuto and the Super Sentai were used as the prototype for the Jaegers in the 2010s when cities along the Pacific Ocean suffered regular attacks from Kaiju. The Pacific Defense League was then converted into an international organization- the Pan Pacific Defense Corps, with a more standardized military structure. The war against the Kaiju would last decades. The PDL would frequently deploy along Asia’s pacific coast to fight Kaiju. In 2016, the PDL was deployed to help suppress the zombie outbreak in South Korea. Japan provided material and logistic support to the United States in the Second Korean War. However. Japan upheld Article 9 and refused to deploy the Pacific Defense League or the Japanese Defense Forces against the North Koreans, despite the requests of the American government.
By the 2020s, technological and societal changes had drastically altered Japan. Millions of Japanese now possessed Digimon partners, while androids and cyborgs had successfully integrated into mainstream society. In contrast to the United States, where androids were exported for slave labor to alien off-world colonies and were hunted down by the police, mechanical life enjoyed full equal rights in Japan. The Third American Civil War threatened American participation in the Pan Pacific Defense Corps. The rebel Alliance to Restore the Republic, based in California, succeeded the United States role in the Pan Pacific Defense League, to the irritation of the theocratic government in Washington D.C. The Guardian Council of Gilead deemed Japan to be waging war against the United States by participating with the rebellion, even though the Japanese military cooperation was limited only to joint operations against the Kaiju. Even after the interdimensional breach from which the Kaiju were released was closed, Gilead continued to denounce the Pan Pacific Defense Corps. As a result, when President Gregory Stillson activated the Doomsday Device, launching thousands of nuclear missiles, he included Japan on his list of targeted nations. For the second time in its history, Japan suffered from multiple nuclear attacks. While the Pacific Defense League were able to divert the nuclear missiles sent to Kyushu and southern Honshu into the Pacific Ocean, the Doomsday Device did not merely include nuclear weapons. The powerful psychic Akira had been fused by Randall Flagg into the Doomsday Device, recognizing that a conventional nuclear attack would be repelled by the Japanese. Akira released an explosion which destroyed Tokyo, to the surprise of the Pacific Defense League. Numerous Mechas and Super Sentai were killed attempting to prevent the destruction of Tokyo, expecting to face conventional nuclear weapons. The destruction of Tokyo disrupted Japan’s anti-missile defense systems. While millions were killed by Akira, a mysterious Super Frog who dwelled under Tokyo evacuated millions of citizens living in Tokyo. The Super Frog seemed supernaturally aware that Tokyo was in danger, warning that the city would be destroyed even before the activation of the Doomsday Device. This allowed Japan a head start in evacuation efforts. Super Frog subsequently joined the Pacific Defense League, although he remained reticent about his identity. He replaced Astroboy, who had been killed diverting a nuclear weapon aimed for Nagoya.
Fortunately, Japan, having been under a constant state of attack for decades, was better prepared than other countries to handle the after-effects of the Doomsday Device. Japan had measures in place to restore Tokyo, given that Tokyo had suffered from destructive attacks numerous times. Japan applied advanced nanotechnology to clean Tokyo of radiation and construct new housing for the survivors. Nanotechnology eliminated the radiation, allowing the construction of Neo-Tokyo. Japan exported its nanotechnology to other countries that had been victimized by the Doomsday Device. Thus, the effects of nuclear winter were drastically reduced, keeping the Earth capable of supporting human life despite the deaths of billions. Japan retained its’ political independence even as many of the nations devastated by the Doomsday Device came under the sway of the American Empire. Damien Thorn, the new American President, quashed the Alliance to Restore the Republic and ordered the occupation of Latin America and Europe. Sentinels, America’s advanced mutant-exterminating robots, swarmed across the Western Hemisphere. Damien Thorn crowned himself Emperor of the Terran Empire and the absolute ruler of Earth. Most surviving nations did not recognize his claims and referred to Thorn’s domains as the American Empire. Thorn demanded that Japan submit to his rule. Ironically he incorporated robots built by Omni-Consumer Products, a Japanese owned company, into his world conquering armies. In the aftermath of the Third American Civil War, American military technology and capabilities had rapidly progressed, supplemented by Thorn’s black magic. Recognizing the potency of the Pacific Defense League, Emperor Thorn restrained his armies from attacking Japan until all the other nations of the world had been conquered.
While Damien Thorn sought to conquer the entire universe, he had a particular interest in Japan. Gaining access to Japan’s advanced technology would allow his Empire to be converted into a galaxy-conquering force. Furthermore, the Emperor became aware of a magical transportation network that was accessible only in Japan. The Galactic Railroad was a magical train that allowed for rapid transportation across the universe. It was mostly used to transport the dead into Heaven, but there had been a few instances of living humans riding it, most of whom were wizards and witches. It was not consistently accessible, but research collected by Thorn’s demonic minions suggested there was a location in Tohoku from which Thorn could access it. The Emperor wished to gain access to the Galactic Railroad as a means of rapid space travel in order to conquer the galaxy. If Thorn possessed the Galactic Railroad, he could conquer the Milky Way Galaxy within months. The collapse of the Galactic Federation had left the Galaxy in chaos and without any central authority. This would be a vacuum the Terran Empire would eventually fill. But the Galactic Railroad would allow this to happen quickly, rather than take centuries of long and costly war.
While Thorn kept knowledge of the Galactic Railroad hidden from his human subordinates, intelligence regarding his plans was eventually provided to the Japanese government by the AI Neuromancer. In 2032, Neuromancer intercepted an email from a demon named Screwtape to one of his subordinates living on Earth. Screwtape mentioned the presence of a Galactic Railroad station in Tohoku, and that Emperor Thorn was plotting to seize it. Neuromancer decided to reassemble the Pacific Defense League in order to prevent Thorn from rapidly conquering the Galaxy and leave him in a position from which he could conquer the universe. Many PDL personnel had been killed in the nuclear attacks on Tokyo and Mount Fuji. Nevertheless, enough of the PDL remained extant for Neuromancer to reassemble into an army. Jotaro Kujo, Josuke Higashikata, Sailor Moon, Ultraman, Astroboy, Super Frog, the detective Near, and the witch Kiki met to discuss a battle plan against the Americans. The police officer Motoko Kusanagi arranged the meeting, having monitored American and demon communications. She had been cooperating with Neuromancer to access Screwtape’s emails. Prime Minister Yoko Kayabuki was kept appraised of the meeting, and agreed to allow the Pacific Defense League to direct Japan's wartime strategy. The witch Kiki contacted her friends in Japan’s magical community to cast protective spells preventing the Galactic Railroad. The PDL agreed to ask their allies in the Digital World for an army of Digimon to supplement their military forces. The Joestar clan agreed to assemble all of Japan’s Stand users in preparation for the coming battle. Neuromancer then contacted the Demon Slayer Corps, a secret society they had uncovered through hacking. The Demon Slayer Corps had defended Japan in olden times, and they agreed to fight against the forces of Hell again alongside the PDL. The Japanese government informed the Andalites of the threat the Anti-Christ posed to the Galaxy; the Andalites agreed to send a fleet to combat the American Empire. The Andalites had developed close relations with Earth following Earth’s participation in the Yeerk War. The ascension of the human supremacist Nehemiah Scudder to the American presidency had ruptured Andalite-Human relations, and the Andalites were confused by the politics of the wars of the 2020s. The Andalites were finally persuaded to intervene in human politics after being persuaded by the Ellimist that Thorn posed a threat to the galaxy. Monster Island was emptied of Kaiju. Sailor Moon summoned the Sailor Starlights and allies from the sanctuary of Elysion. The aliens Kreeblix and Broxholm, former agents of the Interplanetary Council, the defunct governing body of the Galactic Federation, agreed to assemble a joint alien fleet from the remnants of the Federation. Broxholm returned to his home planet Scradzz to gather reinforcements for the Andalites. Scradzz was part of the New Federation, an alliance of a few dozen systems which declared itself the successor state to the Galactic Federation.
Emperor Thorn became apprised of Screwtape’s lax email security, and that the Battle for the Galactic Railroad would thus be far more difficult than he initially anticipated. Thorn decided to build an army of his own to match the strength of the PDL. Thorn ordered millions of Demons to emerge from a portal on Mars, sending a fleet of ships from the International Aeronautics and Space Administration to transport them to Earth. The demon Screwtape, in penance for his crimes, was placed in charge of this army and commanded to serve on the front lines. (Thomas Torquemada, Director of Hell’s Infernal Police, found that Screwtape’s violation of Hell’s email protocol had been “extremely careless” but recommended that he not be disemboweled. Torquemada had been appointed to his position after executing Jesus Christ again when He visited Spain from Heaven.) The Emperor additionally recruited the Shadow Galactica, enemies of Sailor Moon, for his assault. The Shadow Galactica worked directly for the Emperor’s progenitor, the Black Thing. The various alien races which had opposed the Super Sentai for decades were added to his army, including the Gozma and the Yodonheim. Expecting to battle the Shinto Gods in his efforts to subjugate Japan, Thorn summoned the Gods of the Underworld, as well as the gods Orc and Bromion. The Shinigami were also conscripted by Thorn in his invasion, although God had ordered their death notes had been burned years ago following Ryuk’s incursion on Earth. The presence of the Anti-Christ on Earth had torn down the old boundaries between human and magical realms; the angel Castiel had travelled seeking to summon the most powerful incarnations of the old gods. This battle would be between both celestial and extraterrestrial forces.
Before invading Japan, Damien Thorn decided to depose of the Digimon. While Digimon had been corrupted before into soldiers of evil, the Digital World had since stabilized, and the Gennai set up barriers which prevented Digimon from being corrupted by evil forces. While Thorn could have overcome these barriers with time, he was in a hurry to seize the Galactic Railroad and sought to weaken the PDL as quickly as possible. Rather than conquer the Digital World, Thorn resurrected the Digimon Apocalymon to destroy the Digital World and deprive the PDL of Digimon reserves. Apocalymon partnered with the demons of Chelm to invade and completely destroy the Digital World, committing a genocide which wiped out 90% of Digimon. The only survivors of the genocide were those that were stationed on Earth.
Landing in Fukuoka, Damien Thorn battled the god Kachiman, the initial guardian he would have to face to conquer Japan. It was in the battle against Kachiman that Emperor Thorn first deployed his personal stand, Evil (or in Japanese, Aku). This surprised the PDL, who did not expect the Anti-Christ to be a Stand user. Jotaro Kujo, however, remarked that this was unsurprising. Evil was a powerful shape-shifting demon that was a mental extension of the Emperor himself. Evil threw a thousand poison daggers at Kachiman, killing the God at the Battle of Hakozaki Shrine. Godzilla and a battalion of Kaiju then arrived in occupied Fukuoka, but Aku also killed Godzilla, while Mothra, Rodan, Gorosaurus, Manda and other Kaiju were killed by the combined Demon-American army.
At the same time Thorn invaded Fukuoka, Neo-Tokyo was destroyed in another nuclear explosion caused by the revived Akira. Neo-Tokyo was plagued by motorcycle criminal gangs, including one lead by the psychic Tetsuo. Agents of Emperor Thorn manipulated Tetsuo into releasing Akira, knowing he would likely destroy Neo-Tokyo, destroying the Japanese government and leaving Japan more vulnerable to Thorn’s invasion. The failure of the Pacific Defense League to defend Neo-Tokyo is due to the fact that criminal and terrorist violence in Neo-Tokyo was considered an internal matter, while the PDL was geared towards fighting external threats to Japan. The Japanese government badly mishandled managing violence in Neo-Tokyo. Although Captain Kusanagi took to fighting the biker gangs after Tetsuo’s psychic powers caused heavy casualties, the mysterious release of Akira rendered these efforts moot. Motoko Kusanagi returned to Neo-Tokyo from the PDL base in Hanamaki, Tohoku in an attempt to restore order. The PDL has been so focused on repelling Thorn’s foreign army, his Japanese agents escaped their notice. Neo-Tokyo would come under the control of multiple Akira-worshipping death cults. An American expeditionary force lead by George Yamada scouted Neo-Tokyo but was destroyed. Neo-Tokyo would be the last place destroyed in Japan that was conquering by the Americans, when Thorn himself invaded Tokyo and personally executed Shotaro Kaneda, Neo-Tokyo’s de facto leader.
After the fall of Fukuoka and the destruction of Neo-Tokyo, American troops landed in Okinawa and along several spots on Japan’s eastern coast. (Following Nehemiah Scudder’s declaration of the Republic of Gilead, Japan revoked its military treaties with the United States, forcing the evacuation of America’s military base in Okinawa.) Armies of Mechas and Digimon killed a significant number of American troops, but the upgraded American Sentinels ultimately secured the American beachheads on the Japanese coast, allowing the invasion to continue. Arno Stark’s Iron Men supplemented the invasion forces, battling the Sentai armies sent to repel the invaders. The Gozma mercenaries hired by Thorn bombarded Japan from space. As Sentinels seized Kyushu and Shikoku, Thorn’s personal expeditionary force of demons crossed into Honshu, marching north. The Shinto Gods awakened by Castiel had gathered in Kyoto. The goddess Amaterasu had gathered an army of Kitsune, nature spirits, and animals to defend her native land. Thorn’s army of Shinigami, Demons, Gods and aliens clashed against Amaterasu in Kyoto. While the initial wave of demons sent to Kyoto were wiped out, the tide of the battle turned after Thorn, Orc, and Bromion arrived. Thorn even brought Izanami, the mother of Amaterasu, from Hell to demoralize the Japanese forces. Izanami killed Amaterasu in personal combat, causing the Kami army to break apart. Against the combined powers of Hell, the old Gods of Japan were ultimately destroyed. Scattered guerrilla bands of Kamen Riders, Digimon, and Shinto spirits would harass Thorn’s demon army as he marched towards the Galactic Railroad.
Following the Battle of Kyoto, a massive alien fleet headed by the Andalites arrived in Earth’s orbit, with reinforcements from Scradzz and the New Federation. The alien fleet quickly defeated the American space fleet headed by General Mark Naird, while Thorn’s Gozma mercenaries lasted a little longer. The Shadow Galactica fleet then emerged, annihilating the Andalite combined force. As the Shadow Galactica turned to bomb the Pacific Defense League Army surrounding the entry point to the Galactic Railroad in Tohoku, the Sailor Starlights sprang into action. Sailor Moon engaged the Shadow Galactica forces in space, preventing them from bombing the Pacific Defense League.
The witch Kiki delayed the onslaught of the demon armies by placing numerous protective spells around the Galactic Railroad. The operation of the Railroad itself had ceased following warnings from the Pacific Defense League. However, Thorn had brought a squad of wizard headed by his sister Satana and the magician Papa Midnite to remove these magical barriers. Kiki consulted with Zenibaba, a witch in the land of Fairie. Zenibaba concluded that the Anti-Christ was so strong in magic that the combined powers of the Pacific Defense League could not prevent him from seizing the Galactic Railroad. Although the Railroad conductors had cleared the tracks of trains, Thorn would still be able to detect the magical path along which the railroad lay, and thus would be able to use it. The only option, she concluded, was for the Galactic Railroad to be destroyed before Thorn could reach it. Zenibaba then revealed that she was friends with Super Frog, who joined the witch meeting in Zenibaba’s home. Super Frog agreed to use his powers of super strength to crush the railroad while the Pacific Defense League delayed Thorn’s arrival. While the end of the Galactic Railroad would disrupt the spirit world, the threat of conquest by Thorn was considered the greater evil.
Jotaro Kujo commanded the PDL defense of Hanamaki. Ultraman was able to defeat the initial wave of demons, while Jotaro and the JoeStars confronted the demon Screwtape. The Demon Slayer Corps inflicted significant casualties on Thorn’s army. Screwtape produced a powerful stand trapping the Joestars in muck, but he underestimated his opponents’ trickery. Jotaro Kujo’s personal digimon, WarGreymon, was hidden from Screwtape by an invisibility spell, and killed Screwtape while the demon was gloating. Unfortunately, a more devious general force hid among the -
“YOU THOUGHT YOU HAD DEFEATED ME! YOU THOUGHT YOU HAD SAVED YOUR FAMILY! BUT I, DIO HAVE RETURNED! YOU WILL BE ANNIHILATED BY THE MOST POWERFUL STAND USER EVER, DIO! THE WORLD!!!”
demons. The vampire Dio Brando, resurrected by Thorn from Hell, had been sent to deal personally with the Stand users. Dio froze time and slaughtered the JoeStar clan, aided by the dark magic of Satana. Emperor Thorn then arrived and battled Ultraman, the remaining Kamen Riders, Super Sentai, and several Mechas. All of these forces personally engaged Thorn. Thorn decapitated Ultraman and slaughtered the remaining members of the Pacific Defense League. The Demon Slayer Corps deployed multiple spells and attacks against Thorn, but the Anti-Christ rapidly disposed of his mortal foes. Even John Constantine had once fallen at the hands of the Anti-Christ; despite their training the Demon Slayer Corps were only a mere nuisance. Following the deaths of the Demon Slayer Corps, Thorn’s army killed the Mutants belonging to the Pacific Defense League, eliminating the PDL’s main fighting force. While the witches deployed magical spells against the Demons from a distance, the entry station to the Galactic Railroad was protected by only a few cyborgs.
Sailor Moon then fortuitously returned to Earth, blasting the Demons with an enormous blaze of light. Super Frog then reappeared, informing Kiki that a magical barrier near the planet Meridian remained the only obstacle to destroying the railroad. Once this barrier was cleared, he could destroy the railroad with a single feat of strength. The spirits of Faerie mounted an express train onto the railroad, transporting Kiki to the planet Meridian, where she removed the magical barrier. The Japanese witches were allowed to take refugee with Zenibaba rather then return to Hanamaki and face certain doom.
As Damien Thorn deployed his stand Aku to crush Sailor Moon and the Soldiers Starlights, Super Frog finished destroying the Galactic Railroad. A shock permeated the battlefield, and the Anti-Christ sensed that he failed in his battle’s objective. Seething with rage, he launched a terrible scream and flew towards Sailor Moon. Seeing that Sailor Moon was in mortal danger, Super Frog rushed to face Aku. Sailor Moon had been prophesized to play a key role in the defeat of Thorn and to bring about a future Golden Age. Sailor Moon had to be protected to prevent the permanent triumph of evil. Super Frog tackled Aku, dealing a shocking blow to Thorn. Super Frog then battled entire rows of demons, yelling at Sailor Moon and her friends to escape. A few kitsune then appeared, informing Sailor Moon she was to be escorted to Faerie for protection. Sailor Moon reluctantly agreed to leave the battlefield and go into exile, promising to eventually return and bring about the Silver Millennium. Super Frog single handedly battled the entire Demon Army, seemingly more powerful than all of them combined. Eventually, however, Thorn drew forth a terrible sword and smote Super Frog, killing the creature. While he had conquered Japan, his real desire had been thwarted.
The conquest of Japan left Thorn the undisputed ruler of all but a few nations on the planet Earth, which were quickly subjugated. Japanese citizens were faced with retaliatory executions as Thorn raged at his defeat. Imperial propaganda denied the presence of demons in the invading army, claiming that they were alien Sontaran mercenaries merely mistaken for demons. In the 2030s, Damien Thorn’s regime was still precarious and thus Thorn needed to maintain the lie that he was merely human. Dio was appointed Governor of Japan, executing his duties with relish. He was ultimately removed from office and sent back to Hell in the year 2080 after leading a failed coup against the Emperor. Like the rest of the world, Japan suffered from a thousand years of tyranny under Thorn’s iron fist. Sailor Moon, however would return in the 31st century, aiding the forces of the Messiah in the Battle of Armageddon. The forces assembled by Sailor Moon proved critical in the Anti-Christ’s eventual defeat. Sailor Moon would then become ruler of Japan, using it as the basis for the Silver Millennium. She would later clash with the empire of Kang the Conqueror for control of Earth, eventually overthrowing him and briefly establishing an earthly Utopia. She is the last surviving member of the Pacific Defense League.
There were a total of seven wars between Japan and the United States. The first war occurred during the Spanish-American War, when Japan briefly invaded Hawaii and attacked San Francisco when the U.S Navy was otherwise preoccupied. Relations between the United States and Japan improved during the Boxer Rebellion. Despite originally allying with the United Kingdom against German interests in China, Japan later joined the Central Powers, plotting with Mexico to invade the United States during World War I. Japan subsequently attacked California with zeppelin and naval fleets. While this invasion ultimately failed due to the efforts of Old Bill Roberts and Bruce Grahame; this war was an early display of Japan’s technological prowess- they deployed helicopters based on the designs of Leonardo DaVinci as part of their zeppelin fleet. The Pacific Front of World War II is considered the Third American-Japanese War. The Japanese invasion of the Marianas Islands is considered the Fourth American-Japanese War, and World War III is considered the Fifth. The nuclear attacks on Japan in 2026 constitute the Sixth American-Japanese War. When Damien Thorn became President, he apologized America launching nuclear weapons against Japan again, and blamed the activation of the Doomsday Device on his predecessor. Thorn’s apologies averted Japanese retaliation for the nuclear attacks, but relations between Japan and America nevertheless remained extremely tense. Despite agreeing to peace, Japan refused to formally recognize Thorn’s American Empire. Thorn’s invasion of Japan in 2033 broke a non-aggression agreement between the two nations, beginning the Seventh American-Japanese War.
